Illinois Index's
Dear Mr.
Davis,
I’m afraid
that the index is more a help for me to do lookups than for you to do research.
I was getting so many lookup requests for the censuses that I produced the
indexes to make it possible for persons like you to quickly reference the names
and their places in the census. The other thing it did was eliminate searches
for persons who never were in Brown County or at least for the census.
I really
didn’t need to put the index on the web page but decided that it could be of
some use. I hope to be able to put the complete censuses on line at some point.
1880 is now nearly finished. It takes much longer to do the full census than I
expected.
The index
numbers are as you suspected the House numbers, except where the enumerator or
census copier made errors. All the head of households are indexed as well as
other persons in the home of a different surname. It’s not quite a complete
surname index because we did not list everyone of a different surname in a
household. But it’s more that just a head of household index because of the
additional names we entered.
I have a
fair repository of information. I have all the censuses 1830-1920. I have the
“cemeteries of Brown county” book and some history books on Brown and Schuyler
county. Other repositories are the Versailles Historical Society and The Schuyler Brown Historical Society. Addresses for both of
these organizations are on the web page under Helpful Addresses. I have also
found the Mt Sterling Public Library very helpful, but it requires you to go
there since they do not have any staff researchers. It has some books in its
collection, I haven’t found anywhere else.
I checked
the 1880 census for Arthur Davis and found him in Dwelling # 232:

Hope this
helps a little. The above page is how the 1880 census will look when I get it
back online.
Sincerely,

Subject: Brown County, Illinois
Index's
I'm afraid I'm confused with your index system. I
understand the alpha is a designator for the TWP. The number, I think your
saying, is either the house number, the family number or the sequential number
listed for that TWP.
Next, are the names listed, the heads of the household? If so, How do we
obtain the rest of the family, ages, sex, occupation and any notation pertinent?
Do we ask you for that information? My families of Davis',
Stephens, and the Bunfill/Bridgewaters were all in and around Brown/ Cass/
Schuyler, and I have a great deal of information on them, with gaps here and
there, but with the names in the INDEX format, I can't quite figure the pieces
to the puzzle. The major one missing is Arthur Gilbert Davis, born in
Cooperstown TWP abt Nov 1876-77 or even 78 who married Nora E. Stephens, born
in Cass Co... June 11, 1877. marriage date unknown. They show up on
the 1900 census with a son, Harley F. Davis, an uncle, but in between in a
mystery as far as all the documentation for Brown County is concerned. Is
there a Central Depository in Brown County one can go and find information like
this?
Hope to hear from you
Thank You,
William Arthur Davis
Good morning Ken,
Reviewing your MSG again, we do not believe that Lewis Richard Davis' family
moved from the area upon his death. Lewis Richard Davis was buried 1882
in the Crossroads Cemetery, Cooperstown TWP, Brown County, Illinois.
I have an autograph book of Nora's that she evidently received for Christmas
1889 (age 12). On one of the pages there is a message written to the effect
that as there is heaven and earth, someday i will have you for my own, signed
Arthur Davis, friend. If this is the same Arthur Davis (We believe it
is), he and his mother were evidently living in the area and he and Nora knew
each other more than just a chance meeting. We are speculating that he
and his mother (Julian / Julie / Julie Ann / Julie Anne) were either living with
another family in the area, or that she remarried. Because of Lewis'
(Louis) and Julie's (Julian) ages in the 1880 census and his death in 1882, we
a presuming Arthur to be an only child or at best one of two children, but we
have no evidence of any sibling. We were hoping the 1890 Census would
show such evidence in either Brown, Cass, or Schuyler Counties. Schuyler
has a rather thorough Census report as your sample by townships which we have
scoured finding nothing of an Arthur and or Julie------ which brings us down to
Cass and Brown Counties. The logic of this is that the entire family unit
of the Stephens seems to have been located within these areas and if the mother
were relying on family support, she surely would have been close by. And
the information of the other Davis' were still in the area after this, and we
have found no evidence that they were living with any of Lewis' family.
The most logical theory of all I have heard thus far is that she lived in
the area near, or with, her own family. Whatever their names were, we do not
know.

The birth date of Nora is incorrect (1877): I read it to mean they have
been married 3 years (1897 or 1896).
After Harley, Homer was born, (?) then Horace Arthur was born in Versailles Nov
14, 1908. The 1910 Census should indicate Homer's birthdate.
In 1910, the three boys were living with their uncle Emsley A. Davis, I
believe in Coooperstown Twp..
Thank you again for your support and patience
Regards,
Bill Davis
