Thanks for your reply. Madison Henley's widow Corrilla Ann Crawford Henley filed for a pension based on his service in the Civil War. She originally filed on behalf of her minor children and then after she was widowed again in 1904 on behalf of herself. Madison's death date is consistently 16 Jan 1873 throughout the pension file. Also Corrilla remarried in Dec 1873 so we really do want Madison's death date to be 1873! Interestingly or perhaps more so sadly, it took more than 20 years for the government to approve her pension after her second husband died. She only lived a few years after her pension was approved in the 1920's. The best thing in the pension file is an affidavit signed by my great great great grandmother, Eliza Wallace Crawford, stating that she was present at the birth of my great grandmother, Jennie Lois Henley Earl, whom I knew well as she didn't die until I was 18.  Thanks again -- Robin Roderick

 Dear Robin,

Thank you for your response. The entry for Madison Henley (d. 16 Jan

1876 aged 36-4-18) was taken from the book correctly, so if you have a different  death date, it is possible the headstone was, as you say, was extracted  incorrectly. We have no means to check it for you, since we live in Virginia.

If you wish to provide us with a correct death date (d-m-y), and the source, we will be happy to make a note of the problem in our book, along with your name and email as a source reference.

 Thank you,

Thanks for the cemetery and probate lookups and for the suggestions about the land records for Osborn Henley. I do know that he owned land in Schuyler County in the 1830's so that is another road to go down. You might want to note that the death date for Madison Henley was incorrectly transcribed; it should be 1873. 1873 also tallies with his age and a birth date in 1836. Thanks again -- Robin Roderick
