NAMES: Barlow

Dear Laura,

Here is the promised information: 1850 Federal Census of Brown County Ill has Semitha Barlow listed next to Levi Gibson. Our microfilm copy of the census clearly has Barlow as the surname. However, a careless reading could cause the name to be read as Barton because the 'w' looks a little bit like and 'n'. However, the 'l' is definitely not crossed as it would be if it were a' t'. In our transcription of the 1850 census on the website, we wrote the name as Barlow. See:

Dear Laura

I have the censuses here and will look these up for you in the next couple days. Census Takers were notorius for writing the wrong things down so it does not surprise me that you have found errors. However, if we can be sure that you have identified your family, I will change the census listing on my web site to indicate the correct names for future researchers.

Thanks. I will be responding soon.
Sincerely,
Ken Huffman
