NAMES: Bates, Fry

Dear Jennifer,

I had some time and dug out the correct census.

Clarissa Fry is listed in two households in the 1870 census. She was apparently in each household when the census taker arrived.

1870 Fed Census, Mt. Sterling Village, Mt. Sterling Twp, Brown Co, IL 93/93:
(12 July 1870)
Franklin Fry 38, cabinet maker, b. KY
Isadore Fry 35, b. IL
Clarence Fry 11, b. IL
T___ Fry 10, b. IL (male child - can't read name)
Elmon Fry 9, b. IL
Roland Fry 6, b. IL
Laura Fry 1, b. IL
Clarissa Fry 70, b. Maryland

1870 Fed Census, Mt. Sterling Twp, Brown Co, IL 25/25:
(16 July 1870)
John W. Bates 39, farmer, b. KY
Louisa Bates 35, b. KY
Emma Bates 11, b. IL
Ella Bates 9, b. IL
William Bates 7, b. IL
Michael Bates 5, b. IL
Nina Bates 1, b. IL
Clarissa Fry 70, b. Maryland

It would be a good assumption to say that Clarissa is the mother of Franklin Fry and Louisa Bates.

I found a Clarissa Fry in the Cemeteries of Brown County, p. 217 (Mt. Sterling City Cem):

Clarissa, wife of M. Fry (died 19 Apr 1892 aged 72y 1m 2d)
Michael Fry (died 9 Jan 1870 aged 76y 10m 6d)

As you can see, there are some descrepancies between the census age in 1870 and the age at time of death in 1892. Comparison with other censuses would be helpful. other members of the Bates and Fry family, as seen in the census listing are also in this cemetery. Louisa J. Fry is listed as the wife of J.W. Bates, proving her connection to Clarissa.
