Dear Jan,

You have a puzzle indeed. I have checked the cemetery listings you requested, and also the 1860 and 1870 censuses. I have found a burial for a son of Thomas and Mariah, but not one for either of the parents. I also found Francis & Emaline's marriage, which you probably already have. I will list below what I have found. Don't be concerned about the age differences between the 1860 & 1870 censuses, and the wrong place of birth in 1870. The 1870 census was notoriously miscalculated and miscopied.

I checked probates and didn't find either Thomas or Mariah.

There are Johnson marriages in Brown County for a Mariah, several Marys and a Mary Ann, as well as Elizabeth. Did their daughters stay in Brown County and marry there?

I hope what I have found will be of some use to you. Let me know if I can be of any further help. I also have the cemetery book for Bates Co, MO. My husband had family there, and we bought a copy.

Cemeteries of Brown County, IL 1825-1972

South Side Cemetery, p. 353:

    Thomas, son of T. & M. Johnson (died 29 Dec 1866 aged 16y 1m 12d) PAF Calculation gives birth date as: 17 Nov 1850.

Mt. Sterling Catholic Cemetery, p. 169:

Thomas Johnson, son of ?? & C. Johnson (1852-1867) This child's years are similar to the one above. Their religion will make a difference in

                 judging between the two.

1860 Federal Census, Illinois, Brown County, Elkhorn Township, 991/951:

    Thomas Johnson 54, farmer, Kentucky

    Mariah Johnson, 50, New Hampshire

Thomas Johnson 8, Illinois (this boy is very young to be Mariah's child, but it is possible - note that his age would be right for the boy who died)

1870 Federal Census, Illinois, Brown County, Mt. Sterling Township, 118/118:

Thomas Johnson 65, no occupation, Ohio (wrong place!)

Mariah Johnson 55, New York (wrong place!)
