Dear Janet,

I created the 1870 Census index to help me do the lookups faster. I actually read the census from a microfilm copy. There may be, by now, an 1870 census for online viewing. However, the advantage of having me do it is that I don’t cost anything and I have a good knowledge of people living in the county and can often get hard to read names because I am familiar with names and handwriting.

So, as of this time there is not a specific place to go read this entry for yourself that I can refer you to. I will eventually create a full census listing for 1870 as I have done for 1840, 1850 and 1880 Censuses. It takes time, so it will not happen soon. Until then, I can do lookups for you.

Here is the specific entry you requested:

1870 Census of Brown County, Illinois, Lee Twp

56/56   21 June 1870

C. T. Underwood 22 m farm laborer North Carolina

Sarah Underwood 21 f Illinois

I also found this marriage entry in the statewide Marriage Listing:

Groom                                     Bride                            Date                 Book/Page       County

UNDERWOOD, COLUMBUS T   FIELDS, SARAH     03/22/1870    /         ADAMS

The location for this information is: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/GenealogyMWeb/marrsrch.html

This provides a little additional information. You now may want to look at the Adams County Census to find their families. There is a Fields Family in Brown County, but it would be a real stretch to make Sarah fit into that family. The fact that they were married earlier in the year, would indicate that they parents of both may be found in Adams County.

Sincerely,

Ken Huffman

Hi Ken,
I am writing again to ask for your help. As before I want to thank you for
being there for me. I know that it takes so much time and I sure appreciate
it. Whenever you can get to it is fine. I am just excited to find that there
is listed in the 1870 Federal Census for Brown Co., Il. a
C. T. Underwood  L56  Can you tell me how to view that report to see who his
family was or do you need to send it to me? I have been trying to find
information about my Underwood family and this is the first in the area. I
hope it will give other names to go on.
Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Jnaet
