Huffman, Rossell, Snodgrass, Wyman

I am looking for information on my great great grandmother, Hannah Snodgrass, b. 1837, Ohio, m. Caspar/Casper Huffman 22 Jan 1854 Brown Co., IL. I believe they had at least 2 daughters, Mary Elizabeth, b.15 Dec 1859, Brown Co., IL and Harriet b. 1861. After this I can't find any trace of Hannah. I know Caspar enlisted in the Union Army in 1862 and was mustered out in 1865 in Mobile, Alabama. He later dies in 1909 in Dayton, Ohio, where Mary Elizabeth married Hiram Edward Rossell in Ross Co. on 22 Mar 1883. I don't know if Hannah died, remarried or went to Ohio with Caspar.

Hannah's parents were John Snodgrass and Sarah Wyman, who lived in Brown Co and later moved to Schuyler County.

Barker, DeWitt, Thomas

I am seeking information about NORRIS THOMAS, b. about 1803 in Ohio, married to MARY "Polly" BARKER on July 6, 1825 in Ross County, Ohio. They were residing in Brown County, IL by 1840. I know of only one son (from the 1850 Census of Brown County) named Benjamin, born about 1833 in Ohio. Specifically, I wonder if anyone knows the names of any other children.

I am told that Norris was the brother of William Thomas (married to Julia Dewitt) and Benjamin (married to Patience Thomas). All three brothers came to Brown County from Ohio.

Norris Thomas died in 1854 in Brown County, Illinois.

Thomas R. Clayton 18 August 2005

Clayton

I would like to put out this family information and ask if anyone has any information about the family. I would like to find out about the original family members from the oldest generation, and see if anyone has traced their family to this point.

My name: Thomas CLAYTON

Father: James D. CLAYTON

Grandfather: Arthur CLAYTON

Great Grandfather: Calvin CLAYTON (some brothers and sisters include Greenberry, Woodford, John, Nancy J,)

Great Great Grandfather: Ezekiel CLAYTON ( various spellings ) Married two or three times 1830s, 1849, & 1880s.

From what I have learned Calvin is one of the youngest of 12 children fathered by Ezekiel. My father says that he (James) lived on the old farm place when he was a child and moved to Woodriver, IL in the early 1940.

Dan Anderson 24 August 2005

Anderson

Alma L. ANDERSON

Born: December 8, 1895 in Cooperstown, Brown County, Illinois

Married: March 1, 1915

Died: January 30, 1969 in Beardstown, Cass County, Illinois

Married: David H. Anderson first then Charles Drinkwater second.

Father: Charles W. Anderson

Mother: Roxie Orr/Anderson/Bunce

11 children with David H. Anderson

Alma is my grandmother. The only things Ive been able to document are a 1930s Cass County Census listing her as the wife of David H. Anderson and in the SSN Death Index. I know Alma had at least one sister, I believe named Maime or some spelling like that. I would like to learn as much as possible about Almas brothers and sisters.

I have reached many dead ends and hope you could fill me in a little.

ORR

I am new to this list and in search of the surname ORR. Marjory ORR b.circa 1793 PA. and died circa 1861. She is my 4th greatgrandmother.

1850 census she is listed as a widow living in Mt.Sterling,IL. with children Margaret E. 28 b. Oh.,Virginia 22, b.VA.(not sure if that is correct) and a John Q. Adams 5 b.IL. (possible grandson)

1840 Mt Sterling IL. she is listed as Mrs. Marjory ORR.

I believe that Marjory was the widow of James ORR. This was a fairly large family. Their daughter Lethia(Orr) b. 1816 Oh. married Jeremiah PAYNE in Green Co. IL. 1833. They settled in Pleasant Valley Ia. for a while and then later in Hampton,Rock Island Co. IL.

I would like to hear from others who are researching this ORR family.

Thanks,Tina

Eric M. Snyder 23 Nov 2006

I am researching a George Snyder, who was married to a Rebecca. They were originally from Pennsylvania. George was born in 1827 in Schuylkill County PA. They moved from PA out west and they seem to have appeared in the 1880 Census in Cooperstown, Brown County, Illinois. They seem to have a young girl named Lutie Lerch living with them.

Since the 1890 Census is unavailable and I did not locate them afterwards. Is there any way to check for an obituary for George Snyder.

Dean Shirley 18 Oct 2006

My focus is on a ggg grandfather of mine , named Brasilla BARNETT. Born (apparently) in North Carolina on 10 June 1824, Brasilla fought in the civil war, though on which side I do not know. I do know that he married Susannah Province in Madison County Alabama on 17 November 1845. In June 1864 he and his family settled in Brown County Illinois. He is still there. He died of Typhoid on 19 November 1865, in Hushman Station. I should point out that most of the above information is derived from depositions made in support of a pension application for Brasillas widow in the 1880s. Hence, I would think that what was conveyed to the clerk in those far off days was, what is now called, Hersman. I notice that there is a cemetery there. I am not surprised that his name does not appear in the list of permanent residents. I imagine he was buried without a permanent marker. As a matter of interest his children were:

Nancy Jane BARNETT was born in 1846 in Madison Co., Alabama. She died after 1894.

Seaborn William BARNETT was born on 5.12.1848 in Madison Co., Alabama. He died on 26.01.1928 in Madison Co., Alabama.

John Thomas BARNETT was born in 1850 in Madison Co., Alabama.

Emma BARNETT was born in Madison Co., Alabama.

Suzannah BARNETT was born on 2.12.1858 in Madison Co., Alabama. She died on 18.08.1934 in Oneonta, Blount Co., Alabama.

Ann BARNETT was born in 1851/1862 in Madison Co., Alabama.

Thursa Isabell BARNETT "Thursy" was born on 21.02.1862 in Madison Co., Alabama. She died on 25.06.1908 in Oneonta, Blount Co., Alabama

Brasilla John BARNETT was born .11.1865 in Illinois. He died after 1928 in Texas..

I am wondering if anyone has come across any records of any type mentioning Brasillas name? I should point out that in his marriage application his name appears as Bezilar BARNARD, but down the years BARNETT was used as the surname.

I have also wondered why he made the trek to Brown County Illinois from Alabama. I should point out that in the 1850 census of Brown County there is listed a John Barnett (born in Kentucky) aged 26. Give or take a year, Brasilla would have been 26 in 1850. Also there was a Richard Barnett registered in the census who was 32. Perhaps these men were brothers of Brasilla, and if so, then perhaps Brasilla was born in Kentucky not North Carolina. If anyone has any idea of the makeup of this family I would appreciate knowing.

Teri Howden Freedman 23 May 2009

Hi from California.  I am looking for wills, deeds, and marriage records for my Brown-Schuler Co IL Cox-Hill ancestors pre-1850.  I have census info, and
marriages for John Copppage.  Here is a summary of the info for which I would love any documentation (and costs for this) you can point me towards:

I am a descendant of Henry Hill (1775 VA - 1850 IL) m. Susannah (York, b. 1780 VA d. aft 1850 Brown IL - I have no documentation other than 1850 census for Susannah)
(1780 VA - 1850 IL) through his daughter, Malinda Hill, b. 1810 Kentucky, died 1845 IL.
Malinda married William Cox (1804Ky-1856 Brown Co IL), and they were parents of
Darinda Cox (1833 Brown IL -1860 Brown IL) who m. John Peyton Coppage (1824 KY-1902KS). John and Darinda's
daughter, Mary Etta Coppage (1852 Brown Co IL-1935 San Diego, CA), was my great-grandmother (m.  Robert Mefford Sams 1844 IL-1910 AR). John and
Darinda Cox Coppage are living with Henry Hill in Rushville, Schuyler, Illinois in
the 1850 census, along with their baby son and Henry Hill's namesake, Henry Coppage.
I have info that the father of William Cox was John Cox (1777 VA-1850 Brown Co IL) m. Hannah Royalty, but no documentation of either John or Hannah or their parentage of my William Cox.
There is also a lawsuit spanning several years and states brought by John Coppage against the estate of Henry Hill, dec'd --
apparently because John Coppage's first wife, Dorinda Cox, was left out of the legacy to some of the grandchildren from Henry Hill's estate. Eventually, John
Coppage won a judgment in favor of his wife and the other omitted Hill grandchildren. Henry Hill's children were Gamaliel (1809), Margaret
(1798), and Malinda (1810).
I worked with the late Coppage historian, A. Maxim "Max" Coppage in filling out my lines of this old VA family, belonged to
the Brown Co IL historical society many years ago,  proved the John Peyton Coppage ancestor Thomas Barlow of VA as a Revolutionary War patriot in 1985, and with Beck Sams over the past two years on my Brown IL Sams lines, and am happy to
supply any info on the families once they left Brown Co that you might wish to have.

I am looking for information on George W. D. HULLINGER.  Born Oct. 25, 1834 - Died in Versailles on Nov. 14, 1883.
Married Elizabeth (maybe Hattie Elizabeth) Wilson/ Tolen on Sept. 21, 1865 in Cass County.  Buried at Mount Zion Cemetery.
Not sure how accurate these dates are.  I have been trying to find info on George's parents.  Haven't had any luck.  My mother used to say his heritage was Native American.  Any information you can give me will be greatly appreciated.  He was my great grandfather.
