My great-uncle did the genealogical research that we have so far:

Albert Clark Dexter born 12/27/1807 in Vermont married Hannah ? from New York. There are two death dates listed for him in my uncle’s notes: 1850 in Renssaeler County, Grafton Township, New York and also a date in 1882. They had a son, Albert, Jr. and a daughter Alma, and there may have been others.

Their son Albert Clark Dexter, Jr. was born 10/27/1843 in St. Lawrence County, New York. Albert Clark DEXTER, Jr. migrated to Illinois. He married there (to Eliza Stofer) and lived in Mount Sterling, Brown County. He named his children: Solen, William, Herbert, Frank, Cora, Mary, Annie Grace and Albert Clark Dexter III. He fought in the 14th Illinois Infantry in the Civil War, then returned to Mt. Sterling. Around 1872, he moved his family to Dallas, Texas, and then Ellis County, Texas. His family was in Kansas the year he died in Texas in 1885.

We are descendants of Albert, Jr’s son William, whom my grandfather remembers. He was my grandfather’s maternal grandfather.

I am searching on the thinnest bit of evidence: a family photo labeled “Aunt Lucy Brown 1865,” taken by “J. J. Smith of Mount Sterling, Illinois.” This is the only evidence we have, so far, that the family was ever in Illinois. We know nothing about Lucy Brown, except that she is said to be the sister of Ira Baker Brown.

Ira Baker BROWN (b. ?) married Martha Abigail Hopkins, 9 Dec 1853 in Wayne Co., Michigan. They had two children in Michigan, in 1854 and 1856. The family arrived to settle in Missouri in 1865. We do not know where there were between 1856 and 1865…

Ira died in Chillicothe, Livingston Co., MO, in 1898. We know Martha lived until at least 1921, but we have yet to find out when or where she died. Their children’s names (we think) were Nellie, Ida, Samuel Houston, Wallace M., Sue, Charles, and Grace. We have good information only on Nellie and Ira, some on Sam, none on the other children.
Any help with these “Brown County Brown’s” would be most welcome! Even info on the photographer, J.J. SMITH.

For years, many of us have been unable to find the background on Jeremiah Leach. He was born in PA but married and lived in Adams Co. However, he lived in North East Township, near the county border. He married a second time in 1894, but not in Adams Co. He died in 1908, but not in Adams Co. However, he is buried with his first wife in the York Neck Cemetery, Adams Co. If his wife was from Schuyler or Browne, they may have married in her county and he could have died there. If you have any information on marriages about 1894 and deaths in 1908, I would appreciate your looking for a Jeremiah (Jerry or J.) Leach.

Who was Adzora B. MINNICH? When he enlisted from Mt. Sterling he says he was born about 1835 in “Lewis Co., IL”. When admitted to the hospital in Washington D.C, during the Civil War he gives his place of residence as Mt. Sterling, Brown Co., IL. To date we have been unable to locate any records for him in the county. He had married Miss Louisa SANFORD on 5 Dec 1861 in McDonough Co., IL. Louisa died 20 Aug 1862. Adzora then married J. (Jemima) Frances CROW and their son, Herman Zumwalt CROW was born 2 Oct 1864 “near Browning or Astoria”, IL. The family Bible says that Adzora died 20 Jan 1869 “burial site in or near Buckhorn, IL”. Looking for any information or suggestions on locating our mystery grandfather in Brown County!

Hello. I am researching John W. HARVEY. He may have lived in Brown County around 1860. He had a wife named Caroline Sullivan HARVEY. They were married in Mt Vernon, Jefferson County, IL. in April of 1860. They had two children, John Thomas HARVEY and Mary Belle HARVEY. Sometime around 1865 John disappeared. I found Caroline and the two children back in Jefferson County with her parents, Tom and Purlina Sullivan in 1870. Thanks.

Looking for any information on a G. TAYLOR and his wife, Nancy Ann ___. She was b. abt 1779 and d. in 1842, at Schuyler Co., IL. She is buried at Mt. Harmony/Davenport cemetery and on her tombstone, it says Nancy Ann TAYLOR, wife of G. They probably m. abt 1800 and possibly in KY. They had at least two daughters, Elizabeth Ann TAYLOR, b. 1816 in KY, m. 1833 to Daniel JAMES; and Nancy Ann TAYLOR, b. 1818, m. 1834 to Elias HARRIS. The older Nancy signed for both of these daughters to marry in Schuyler Co., IL, so her husband was probably deceased.
